Weeks 1-3 in Review

Academic and Social Foundations

Classes have been underway for a couple weeks. Most scholars have had an exam or two and are working hard to complete their final projects. They are supported by a cadre of mentors and supplemental instructors who are encouraging them to maintain strong communication, time management, and self-care as they enter the stressful finals “season.”

Outside of class, scholars have participated in a number of experiences, designed to prepare them for college. Here are some highlights:

Communication and Community Building

Over the years, we have consistently found that scholars learn better and co-exist more peacefully when they practice community building. To that end, faculty, mentors and SIs have built experiences designed to encourage collaboration, communication, and camaraderie.

Scholars participated in Communication Olympics during Welcome Week, a series of interactive activities designed to explore aspects of communication. This event led into discussions about residence hall life and roommate agreements.

Introduction to African American History

To bring context to the HBCU experience, BSA introduces scholars to some of the people and events that paved the path for the founding of Bowie State University and other institutions. This year, we visited the National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, D.C. and Harriet Tubman’s Underground Railroad sites in Cambridge, MD.

Growth Mindset

BSA encourages scholars to embrace a growth mindset—the belief that intelligence is not fixed and instead can be developed. The mentors and supplemental instructors introduced the concept during Welcome Week with a series of hands-on activities.

Introduction to Campus Departments and Offices

The scholars have been introduced to a variety of support and learning opportunities, including Campus Safety, The Nursing Simulation Center, and Counseling Center.
